The care of the dried pitcher of the pitcher plant
Many a hobby gardener is unsettled when the pitcher of the pitcher plant suddenly dry up and no longer look beautiful. In an otherwise healthy plant, this is a normal process. What care do the dried-up pitchers need?
The drying of the cans is normal
In a pitcher plant, which has a favorable location and is well maintained, the drying of the cans is quite normal. Depending on the plants, it may take a few weeks to a year for the cans to dry.
If the cans dry up prematurely or if no cans form, the Nepenthes is too dark or the humidity is too low.
Only cut completely dried up pitchers
Even if the dried out pots do not necessarily look good, you should not cut them right away. As long as some moisture is contained in it, the plant can obtain nutrients from it.
For the care of the dried cans it is therefore necessary to leave them on the plant first. They are not cut until they are completely dry.
Cut off only the dried-up pot yourself. You must leave the sheet over it.
This prevents premature drying out
The pots of Nepenthes dry up very quickly and actually too early, several causes can be responsible:
Place the pitcher plant in a bright place where it does not get too much direct sun. The plant does not tolerate more than four hours of sunlight. Make sure that the humidity is at least 60 percent.
Often too much fertilizer is responsible for premature drying of the cans. Fertilize Nepenthes only very carefully. It is usually not necessary to fertilize a pitcher plant.
Never remove the liquid from the cans
If the jugs contain no liquid, they also dry up. If you accidentally spill the supposed water, you can add some rainwater. This can delay the drying for a short time.
Tips
The pitchers of Nepenthes contain fluid. It is not as often wrongly assumed to be water, but to digestive fluid. It is needed for the processing of insects caught in the cans.
