California poppy seeds: How does the sowing process succeed?
As beautiful as the California poppy (also called gold poppy) with its golden yellow flowers is also - unfortunately it is only a one-year summer flower. Anyone who wants to admire their flowers every year should sow them. But how does that work?
Spring or summer - when is sown?
Between April and September the gold poppy can be sown. The earlier you sow the seeds, the higher the likelihood that the flowers will appear in the same year. Who sows only from June, must reckon with that the flowers develop only in the next year. Attention: The California poppy must survive the winter (hardy to -10 ° C).
Does the soil have to be prepared and which location is suitable?
The soil does not need to be thoroughly loosened and enriched with compost. All you have to do is remove larger roots and stones and loosen it a bit. The location that is selected should be full sun. The California poppy is in great need of heat and likes it hot.
Good for sowing are embankments, open meadows, coastal areas and edges of fields. There is full sun. Dry soil is not a problem. Once the seeds get water, they begin to germinate at suitable temperatures.
Deploy the seeds and wait ...
Now it can start:
Harvest seeds for the next generation
You can buy the seeds, but also harvest them yourself. In September, the seeds are mature. They are in up to 10 cm long and cylindrical shaped pods. At maturity, the pods open on the long sides.
The seeds are small, brown to black, elliptic and reticular patterned. If you want to pre-culture them, you can start home in February. From May, the small plants can then go outside.
Tips
In favorable locations, the California poppy seeds by itself sows. He is helped by the wind and animals that scatter the seeds.
