Cutting the young plum tree correctly: Helpful hints
Sustainable growth and abundant harvest are the results of a correct pruning. From the second year on, this has a positive effect on the development of young plum trees. We give you practical tips for the right procedure.
Positive effects
Another benefit of regular cutting is that the tree develops a healthy balance between shoots and fruits. For this reason, the appearance of the crown is in focus. If the branches are well blended, sufficient light gets to the shoots, leaves and flowers. Consequently, the fruits ripen to sweet delicacies.
Targeted blending
Mainly all lower side shoots are to be removed. These grow up to a maximum of 50 centimeters above the ground. Intersect all steeply awake or narrow branches directly above the pruning shears. In the next step, you focus on the center drive. The cutting tool is about 40 centimeters above the highest side shoots.
Furthermore, you cut back young shoots. These grow on average for a maximum of one to two years.
Tip:
Remove old and knotty branches in any case. Hanging and bare branches affect growth unfavorably.
Choose the right time
Plums belong to the fruit trees. The dormancy between November and March is considered a suitable time for pruning. The hardy wood should not be cut in any case only in case of frost. There is a risk here that the wood will be brittle. The tree is developing only weakly.

Tips & Tricks
If your plum tree sprouts only slightly, it can be cut more on the next pruning. This supports a vigorous budding in the next spring.
