Japanese azalea begins flowering in late spring
The Japanese Azalea is closely related to the Rhododendron, however, in contrast to this often only deciduous. However, the winter hardy shrub inspires with an abundance of large flowers, which are available in many different colors. The most common are tones in the pink and red spectrum, but also yellow or white flowers.
Flowering time of the Japanese azalea depends on the variety
Like rhododendrons, azaleas bloom primarily in late spring, with specific flowering times depending on the variety. Most Japanese azaleas bloom between April and May, with some even reaching into June. Incidentally, you can extend the flowering period if you remove blooms by breaking them off, especially in young plants. Be careful not to watch over them, nor to damage soft shoots.
Tips
In order for Japanese azaleas to bloom abundantly, they must be fertilized regularly. Begin fertilization at the start of the growing season - ie in March - and continue until October.
