Which hydrangeas are allowed to be cut in summer?
Hydrangeas are very easy to care for and inspire the gardeners by their blooming joy. However, the pruning of the garden beauty is a sealed book for many. Should the hydrangea be cut back in spring or autumn or even in summer?
The editing groups
The hydrangea is divided into different cutting groups according to the recommended cutting time. You can find out which section of the plant you have implanted from the plant label.
Hydrangeas of section 1 start the flowers for the following year already in the previous year. Therefore, these hydrangea species may only be cut very gently and carefully. For maximum flower abundance you should only light up these plants in spring.
Hydrangeas of section group 2 form the flowers on the new shoot. They are cut back like all classic summer bloomers in late autumn or early spring.
Exception Hydrangea "Endless Summer"
In contrast to other farm hydrangeas, this hydrangea, which is very close to the classic farmer hydrangea, has flowers in the year of pruning. However, in order for this hydrangea to start blooming as early as possible, it should not be pruned too much in spring.
Care in the summer
With the blue hydrangea "Endless Summer" and the white hydrangea "The Bride", remove the withered blossom just after blooming. These hydrangeas, like flowering summer flowers on the same shoots, form new flowers that open in the same year.
Break out the flowers with care
You can remove blooms from all Hydrangea species during the summer. You can simply cut out the withered flowers with a clean and sharp rose scissors. However, it is advisable for the plant health to carefully break out the flower umbels.
In summer, you can also light up the branches so that more light penetrates into the inner area of the plant. This care measure has a very positive effect on the regeneration of the flowers.
