Fight snails at the hydrangea

Nudibranchs do great damage in the garden. They do not disdain the foliage and the flowers of the Hydrangea and can eat whole plants in a very short time, especially in damp weather conditions.

Preventive measures against the pests

Already in advance you can do a lot to avoid a snail invasion in the hydrangea bed.

Really mulching

Covering the ground around the hydrangea with a mulch layer brings many benefits. Unfortunately, fresh plant remains such as deciduous or grass clippings provide the snails optimal living conditions and attract the animals. Therefore, mix dry straw under the mulch material and remove only a thin layer of mulch.

Water in the morning hours

Pour the plants in the morning so that the leaves dry well. The nudibranchs are active mainly in the evening and at night and prefer plants with fresh, damp leaves. Therefore, avoid sprinkling the plants and pour the hydrangea with a broad jet.

Limitation of the beds

There are several barriers to keeping snails out of the hydrangea bed:

Fighting snails

In order to keep the number of pests in the frame, you should collect creeping animals in the evening. Lay out boards in the bed or put upside down flower pots near the hydrangea. Under these traps, the snails crawl, so you can easily collect the animals the next day.

Promote beneficials

Make the garden as natural and varied as possible, and offer suitable shelter to beneficial animals such as hedgehogs or toads.

Beer traps hurt more than they help

Often one hears the tip to bury beer traps in the bed to fight the annoying nudibranchs. The smell of the barley juice is so tempting for the animals, that the snails from the neighbor's garden are magically attracted to it. As a result, you often have more snails in the garden than before.

Avoid slug pellets

Slug grain promises quick success in the fight against nudibranchs. Remember, however, that with this remedy you will kill not only the slugs, but also the useful snails. Pets or children take the active ingredients contained, they also often show signs of intoxication.

Tips & Tricks

Worm snails such as the vineyard, grove and garden snail prefer to fade on withered foliage. Smaller augers also cleanse the branches of hydrangea from mounted algae and fungi for plant health.
