What size can hydrangeas achieve?
Many know the hydrangea only as a pretty houseplant or garden flower, which regularly cut roughly reaches the height of other shrubs. If you refrain from this pruning, the magnificent flowering shrub can grow up to four meters, depending on the variety.
Farm hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla)
The farmer's hydrangea is often sold as a "mother's day flower" cultivated in a pot. It is one of the most common species in our gardens. Put this hydrangea in the field, it can be up to two meters high.
Oak-leaved Hydrangea (Hydrangea quercifolia)
This hydrangea owes its name to the beautifully lobed foliage that resembles that of the native oaks. The conical umbels reach a size of up to thirty centimeters and hang down slightly. Depending on the variety, it is between 1.50 meters and 3 meters high. It tends to overgrow somewhat and can be cut back in spring if necessary.
Climbing hydrangea (Hydrangea petiolaris)
This Hydrangea grows very slowly at first and usually blooms only after a few years. With its anchoring roots, it can hold itself to rough surfaces and then reaches heights of up to seven meters.
Panicle hydrangea (Hydrangea paniculata)
In its natural habitat, this species grows into impressive shrubs seven meters high, but rarely reaches more than two meters in our native gardens. It is quite cut tolerant and can be educated as a small spherical bush or Hochstamm depending on personal preference.
Velvet hydrangea (Hydrangea sargentiana)
This hydrangea owes its German plant names the pretty velvety leaves which are covered on the underside of a dense, white-gray fluff. It is up to four meters high with good care.
Plate hydrangea (Hydrangea serrata)
This hydrangea captivates with its natural flowers that form a colorful wreath around the inconspicuous inner flowers. Plate hydrangeas not only make smaller flowers than the closely related farm hydrangeas, their growth and size are smaller. As a result, the pretty shrubs also fit untrimmed very well in small bones.
Forest Hydrangea (Hydrangea arborescens)
These white or green flowering hydrangeas have become increasingly popular in recent years as their exceptional appearance fits well in modern landscaped gardens. They grow up to three meters in size and form flower balls with a diameter of up to 25 centimeters.
Tips & Tricks
Many hydrangeas are not completely hardy. Therefore, it is advisable to plant them only when they have reached a certain size. Slowly get your potted plants to the changed conditions in the field before you put them in the bed.
