The common horn clover - an old medicinal plant in the profile
The common horny clover is a very variable plant that grows in various forms almost everywhere in Europe, preferably on calcareous dry and nutrient-poor grasslands. The bright yellow blooming butterfly flower has a very high sugar content in its flower nectar and is therefore often planted by beekeepers as bee pasture. In addition, the summer flower is suitable due to its high protein content as a food plant for domestic animals and livestock and is used because of its calming and cramping properties as a medicinal plant.

Horn clover in the garden
Horn Clover is a low-growing small shrub that spreads over time. The plant feels most comfortable in sunny locations - the sunnier, the more abundant the luminous flowers are. The soil should be very permeable, moderately nutrient-rich and calcareous, with horny clover especially in rockeries and unfortunately also in lawns diligently. In addition, some species of horn clover can also be kept in planters (eg in traffic lights). This type of cultivation is particularly suitable for non-hardy Mediterranean species such as the Canary Horn Clover.
Tips
Hornklee is traditionally planted as a bee pasture. The flower nectar contains about 40 percent of a very high sugar content, in addition, the plant has a very long flowering period. Due to the high protein content, horn clover is also often grown as a forage plant, for example in the course of cattle farming. Its medicinal properties were only discovered by chance in the 19th century, since then the flowers of the common horned clover are used in natural medicine.
