Hop tendrils can grow up to seven meters!

Cultivate and reap hop hop

Hops form long hop tendrils that grow upwards via a trellis. The tendril produces flowers and later fruits, when the non-toxic hop plant is female. Hop tendrils are ideal shade donors and can also be dried for decoration purposes.

Hop tendrils are fast growing

Depending on the variety, a hop-plant can reach five to seven meters in one season. In the bucket, the tendrils remain smaller.

Hop tendrils show impressive growth. On average, they grow daily by ten centimeters. If the climate is favorable, they will even be one meter longer per week.

This is why hop tractors are ideal for shading balconies, terraces and pergolas. At the fence or on the terrace, they form a dense, decorative screen in summer.

Hopfenranken are right-handers

Hop tendrils have a special feature. They always turn clockwise around the trellis. If the direction changes for some reason, the hop-pot stops growing. As soon as the tendril winds to the right, the hops continue to grow.

If you help the hop-hop climbers, always guide them around the plant support in a clockwise direction.

Harvest hop crops

The hop fruits grow on female plants in August and September. Since the hop tendrils are so high, the fruits can only be harvested with a ladder.

If that's too much work for you, simply cut down the hop pot so that it only has a residual of about 80 centimeters.

From the cut tendril, the fruit can be picked quickly and easily.

Dry hop branches for decoration purposes

Hop tendrils are very decorative, especially if they bear fruit. Unfortunately, the leaves do not dry themselves. A hop vine with fruits is also very pretty without leaves.

Cut off the vine, remove the leaves and hang them upside down in a warm, dark and dry place. To keep the hop-pot long, spray it with hairspray.

Tips

In the fall, hops dress. The Hopfenranken then dry up and are either cut or remain until spring. They will then be cut back in February - before the new expulsion.
