Raised bed enclosure - Which materials are particularly suitable?
For the interior of a raised bed is best suited to the classic compost layering, but pure potting soil can be filled in such a flower box. For the outer edging, you can use a variety of materials, which differ greatly not only in their properties, but also in their price.
Suitable materials for the raised bed enclosure
Classic surrounds for the raised bed consist of the following materials:
Wood
Raised beds made of wood should be made of hardwood such as larch, as this is particularly weather-resistant and thus durable. Cheaper (and easier to build), however, wooden raised beds editions of Euro pallets.
stone
Stone raised beds can be built from natural as well as from concrete blocks and are considered to be particularly stable and durable. As a cheap alternative, you can also use bricks, paving or planting stones. Also manhole rings are very suitable for a raised bed enclosure.
gabions
These are wire baskets that can be filled with a variety of materials and used as a border. They are usually made of galvanized steel and are very durable.
metal
Corten steel is particularly suitable for raised beds made of metal, as it is particularly durable. In addition, it looks very interesting through its surface and makes the raised bed an eye-catcher in the garden or on the terrace.
plastic
Plastic raised beds are particularly light and are therefore particularly suitable for balcony and terrace, where you must pay attention to the total weight of the raised bed due to the static.
No matter which material you choose, you should absolutely line the raised bed with a waterproof film or fleece on the inside, so that the moisture from the filling does not penetrate into the border, destroying it over time.
What prices do you have to expect for an enclosure?
The enclosures mentioned are very different in terms of cost, they also vary widely within a group.
Wood
Raised beds made of wood can be favorably built for 50 to 100 EUR, but then consist rather of inferior and therefore less durable wood. High-quality hardwood costs for a raised bed about 300 to 400 EUR, depending on the size.
stone
Stone raised beds can vary in price from 50 to 100 EUR up to several tau EUR, depending on which stone types you want to use and which tools or construction machines you need. Gabion baskets as a border for the raised bed (which can be filled, for example, with field stones), however, are already available from about 100 EUR.
Metal and plastic
Metal and plastic edging for the raised bed are already very cheap from about 100 EUR available.
Tips
You can get a raised bed at a particularly favorable price if you upcycle old objects such as a bathtub and - instead of throwing them away - redirect them to a new destination.
