Ytong stones have to be lined
Is it possible to build a raised bed from Ytong?
Raised beds can be built from many materials. However, raised stone beds are very expensive - especially for models made of natural stone. Many resourceful gardeners have come up with the idea to use cheap Ytong stones instead. That, however, is usually not such a good idea.
What is Ytong?
Especially for the interior Ytong is ideal. This originally Swedish invention is a mixture of lime, quartz sand, cement, water and aluminum powder, which acts much like a leavening agent and causes the numerous fine air bubbles in the aerated concrete - as Ytong is also called. Therefore, the material was formerly referred to as gas concrete. Ytong is light, cheap to buy, has good heat, is ecological and recyclable. These qualities seem to make Ytong perfect for building a raised bed.
Is Ytong suitable for raised beds?
However, this is urgently to be discouraged, because Ytong absorbs itself quickly thanks to the countless fine air bubbles full of water - to then freeze next winter and then crumble. As raised beds are generally very humid, a constant contact with water can not be avoided by nature.
You have to pay attention to this when building up with Ytong
If you still want to build a raised bed of Ytong stones - because you have a lot of them left and do not know where to put them - you should definitely follow our tips:
Once this is done, you can fill and plant the raised bed.
Tips
It makes more sense, however, to use other concrete blocks instead of Ytong. Hollow stones, paving and planting stones, bricks or even self-collected field stones are much better suited for such a project and also not much more expensive.
