What are stairs raised beds?
Staired raised beds are beds that are staggered like stairs one behind the other. They can be maintained while standing or sitting. The planting stairs offer a whole series of advantages: the bricked supporting structures ensure the slope, the flat beds increase the planting area and - last but not least - the beds can be maintained safely, ergonomically and easily.

The design of such a step high bed is not easy, especially if it is a very steep garden with difficult geological conditions. Even the planning of the stairs, the calibration and subsequent staircases poses problems for the layman. Retaining walls, for example, have to be calculated and constructed in such a way that they absorb the slope pressure. You can safely descend smaller embankments yourself, but you should always ask a civil engineer or structural engineer for higher slopes with staggered walls and unclear ground conditions.
Which materials are best?
Natural stones or concrete blocks, which can be selected according to size, weight, toothing and other characteristics, are well suited for the construction of such raised raised beds. For the construction, you should also distinguish between walls with laid stones and set palisade walls. While for the former compacted ballast foundations of about 40 centimeters deep are sufficient, you need a deep trench for palisades. This must absorb the stone columns up to a third of their length.

On steep slopes, you must also plan the necessary stairs very carefully: For a bed height of 90 centimeters, six steps, each 15 centimeters high, are required.
