The table raised bed - ideal for balcony and terrace
Table beds are special forms of raised beds that can be built and used free standing or leaning against a wall. Many constructions are possible, from the round, on a center column free standing to the square leaning bed on four legs.
The classic, angular desk bed with legs
The typical table and stand high beds are on four, rarely six legs or on a rack. Here, the actual planter is usually only between 25 and 35 inches high, so it offers less space for soil and roots than a Aufsetzhochbeet. For this reason, table beds are also not suitable for the classic raised bed filling, since the available space for composting is not sufficient. Instead, these beds are simply filled with a mixture of plant and compost soil. Often table raised beds near the foot have a shelf that can stabilize the construction and serve as a storage area for the work utensils.
Which materials are best for a table-top?
Table raised beds can be made of different materials. Often these raised beds are made of wood, metal or plastic - especially the latter two are due to their lower weight for the balcony. In addition, these materials are weather resistant. Of the commonly used wood species, the robinia often referred to as "acacia" is considered to be particularly durable. Larch, Douglas fir and pine are also very robust, the cheap spruce, however, classified as less durable. Special features include upright beds with large plant bags made of felt or plastic fleece.
Free-standing, round table beds
A free-standing, round table bed is an interesting eye-catcher in the garden. Particularly practical are round, easily accessible from all sides plant tables, for example, on a flat paved square. Easy to build yourself is such a bench from a sustainable center column and a polygonal or round table top with a high, circumferential edge. It is important that the load-bearing center column is anchored to the stand without tilting. For this you can dig a manhole ring about 30 centimeters deep into the ground and fill it with coarse gravel or gravel. The table must not tip over, even if someone sits down on his edge or is supported there.
Tips
Free-standing benches with a center column are easy to drain if the table top has a slope towards the middle.
