Paint the raised bed only with non-toxic paints
Raised beds are often made of wood and are not only visually attractive, but also much cheaper and to have less effort than a stone raised bed. Their disadvantage, however, is that the material is not very durable - even if you use the much more robust hardwood, the bed is not for eternity. However, good wood protection can increase the life of the bed.
Chemicals pass into the wood and into the potting soil
Of course, many hobbyists and do-it-yourselfers quickly resort to the wood-protective glaze, varnish or paint for this purpose. However, this handle must be carefully considered, because with a normal wood protection (such as for the terrace) it is not done in the case of a raised bed. Non-toxic agents should always be used. The reason is quite simple: the chemicals from the spread go into the wood and from there into the potting soil - with the result that the same toxins migrate into the vegetables and finally into your stomach and your family.
Should one even delete a raised bed?
Basically, painting the raised bed - if you have used hardwood to build it - is not necessary. Instead, the bed should be kept away from the damp soil, rainwater, however, should be able to dry quickly. However, the regular treatment with wood-protective paints or glazes can help to ensure that the raised bed retains its beautiful color for longer - and also lasts longer. Many woods tend to gray over the years, which can be hindered by a color treatment.
Never give up the foil
Many hobby gardeners come up with the idea to omit the protective foil in the inside of the bed and instead simply paint the wood. However, this measure is not suitable for a meaningful protection against moisture and thus the rotting of the bed. If you want to swipe, you can edit the outer border.
