Why you should not wash raspberries
Raspberries are very delicate fruits. They tolerate neither pressure nor prolonged storage. Above all, raspberries should not be washed if possible. They lose a lot of aroma and rot faster.
The right time to harvest
Raspberries should be harvested if possible in the morning when it is not raining. The fruits are then beautifully dry and dirt hardly adhere.
Carefully read raspberries
By reading it right when picking, you can avoid washing the berries.
Sort out moldy or rotten fruits immediately and make sure that they do not even get into the harvesting basket. This also applies to spiders and insects that are in the shrubs.
Afterwards, when reading it, notice that you have overlooked moldy fruits should you rinse the raspberries to remove the mold spores.
To wash raspberries, if necessary
Tips for washing raspberries
Place the raspberries side by side in a sieve with larger holes. Vegetable sieves made of plastic are better suited than metal sieves with tight meshes. Broader holes drain water faster.
Larger amounts of raspberries are best washed in several stages. If the fruits are on top of each other, they get bruised and also not properly clean.
Do not set the jet of water too hard. The delicate raspberries burst due to pressure and lose fruit juice.
Drain raspberries after washing
To ensure that the raspberries dry quickly after cleaning, gently swing the sieve over the water basin.
Place the damp fruits on a kitchen crepe and roll it gently on top of it. The crepe takes up the water.
Consume washed raspberries quickly
The storage time of raspberries is very short. When the fruits have been washed, it is even shorter.
Consume the fruits immediately or process them immediately to compote or jam.
Washed raspberries must be well dried if you want to freeze them. Otherwise they stick together and become completely soggy when thawed.
Prevent contamination
You can do a lot in the garden to keep the raspberries clean on the bush. You then save yourself the cleaning or even washing the fruits.
Tie up the rods. Then the raspberries do not come into contact with the soil.
Sprinkle the soil under the bushes with straw. Even if raspberries fall to the ground or the rods hang down, the straw cover protects against dirt.
Tips & Tricks
If it is imperative that you wash the raspberries, never leave them in the water for long periods of time. Otherwise, the fruits will be soft and mushy.
