Raspberries mulch for an ideal soil climate
Raspberries only bear abundantly where the soil is rich in nutrients and evenly moist. Mulching is the ideal solution to create an ideal soil climate. At the same time you make sure that you have less work with the weed removal.
What does mulching do?
Under mulching, the gardener understands the application of a layer of natural materials on a bed or under shrubs.
Garden waste can be used as materials. Bark mulch is particularly suitable for covering the soil.
Mulberry raspberries
In raspberries, mulching proves to be useful several times.
The mulch cover keeps the moisture in the soil, provides by rotting as a fertilizer for a good nutrient supply and keeps the soil loose.
Through the cover weeds under the raspberry bushes can not or hardly accumulate. This is important because dense weed growth favors the dreaded Ruthen disease.
The best time to mulch
The best time to mulch is autumn for autumn raspberries. After cutting back the late varieties, the material is evenly distributed among the shrubs. The blanket may be spread two to five centimeters thick.
Summer raspberries are best mown after cutting back in summer after harvest. Once you've cut back the two year old rods, take out the mulch blanket.
In principle, however, you can mulch all year round. If you have grass clippings or chopped shrubs, spread the material just under the raspberries.
Good mulching materials
All materials that are natural and rot are suitable for mulching. They release nutrients that significantly improve the soil.
Artificial mulch covers are offered in specialist shops. They consist of fleece or similar materials. This material rots with time, but is not as nutrient-rich as bark mulch and Co. These blankets are used primarily against weed infestation and to protect against dehydration.
Tips & Tricks
Never use mulching materials from diseased plants. Contaminated mulch layers spread the diseases on the shrubs. Already flowering plant material should also not be used. It germinates on the ground and provides additional weed growth.
