In the genus of harp shrubs are usually perennial herbaceous plants or shrubs, which are not winter proof in Central Europe. Many species come from Africa or Southeast Asia and are well adapted to the local climate.
However, you do not necessarily have to buy new plants every spring, because there are other ways to prevent this, as well as overcrowding old plants. The harp shrub grows very quickly and can be easily multiplied by leaf cuttings. If the leaf nodes hit the earth from hanging shoots, then small roots quickly form there. After some time, you can easily separate and transplant the daughter plants.
How to care for the harp shrub in winter?
Occasionally, the harp shrub is also found as a houseplant. In winter, he enters a resting phase. During this time he needs no fertilizer and less water than in the growing season. Ideal are temperatures between 12 and 15 ° C. In similar conditions you can also try to overwinter your harp shrub from the garden, for example in a heated greenhouse or conservatory. This is especially true for freshly grown seedlings.
The harp shrub can be propagated practically at any time. It's best to start with it in late summer, then you'll have vigorous plants next spring to keep cats and other unwanted animals out of your flowerbeds.
Cut about 5 - 7 cm long head cuttings and remove the lower leaves. Then put these shoots directly into growing substrate and keep it moderately moist. In a bright place without direct sunlight, fresh roots are formed after a short time. Now you can repot the plantlets. However, the young plants should stay inside until the end of May.
