What do the flowers look like from the ginkgo?
The Ginkgo tree is not least because of its specially shaped leaves an attractive ornamental tree in the garden, the flowers are probably hardly responsible. In terms of color, they attract little attention, more interesting is the fact that there are pure and male trees.
You will not notice the difference in a young ginkgo, because the leaves look the same. Only during sexual maturity, the differently shaped flowers show up. Only the female flowers later develop mirabelle-like fruits. Your seed coat does not smell very pleasant in its ripe state. The scent is reminiscent of rancid butter, because the shell contains butyric acid.
How are male and female flowers different?
The male flowers grow as so-called kittens. These are about two to three inches long and appear in front of the leaves mostly in March. The pollination takes place in the ginkgo by the wind. After flowering, the kittens fall off.
The female flowers usually sit in pairs on small, one to one and a half inches long stems. As a rule, however, only one fruit matures there. Although the fruits are similar to mirabelle plums, they are botanically nuts.
