Before wintering geraniums should be cut back
Cut back geraniums before wintering
Geraniums are not hardy and must therefore be kept frost-free, but cool over the winter. You can also overwinter the flowers without soil and in the dark cellar, which takes up very little space. In addition, this minimizes the care required for the sensitive plants. However, the condition is that the geraniums are cut back in time before the winter break.
Pruning before hibernation
Start by removing all leaves, buds and flowers. In particular, the leaves would rob the plant only in winter power, they are also a dangerous gateway for bacteria and other germs. When everything is green, all that remains is the bare scaffold of woody and fresh shoots - which are also shortened by about one-third to one-half. After pruning, the geranium should have a height of about 20 centimeters.
Do not forget root cut
Just like the above-ground parts of plants, the roots should also be trimmed to thin and rejuvenate them. For this purpose, the thin, fibrous roots are removed, while the thicker and stronger root and root roots are only slightly shortened. Also, you should carefully cut away foul and dead parts.
Geraniums also cut in spring
In the spring, another pruning is necessary before the first sprouting to remove over the winter grown water shoots. These feeble twigs can not develop flowers and inhibit the plant only in their development. After the spring season, plant the geraniums in a pot or balcony box with fresh substrate.
Tips
Nevertheless, you should only put the freshly cut and planted geraniums in the middle of the month until the end of May, when there are no more dangers due to frosty temperatures. Geraniums (which, botanically correct, are actually called pelargoniums) are very sensitive to cold and should preferably not be exposed to temperatures below five degrees Celsius.
