To save space, the geraniums can be hung up for the winter
Keep geraniums hibernating easily: just hang the flowers!
Although geraniums (which, by the way, are really called pelargoniums) are very widespread on German balconies, they actually come from the rather dry and hot desert areas of southeastern Africa - no wonder the popular flowers are not hardy for us. Many balcony gardeners refrain from hibernation, while you can bring geraniums very space-saving and in the dark over the winter.
Keep geraniums hibernate to save space
For this, first of all, before the first frost a drastic pruning is required, in which you remove all leaves, flowers and buds and also shorten the half-ripe shoots. The naked geraniums are now removed from the planter and carefully separated. Now remove excess soil from the rhizome and then cut back or clear the roots. Finally, the rootstock can be well packed and sealed in a clear plastic bag (eg a freezer bag). Now hang the geranium upside down in a suitable place - for example in the dark and cool cellar - so that the roots point upwards.
Tips
If you hang up the geraniums, this should necessarily happen upside down. As a result, the residual moisture from the roots flows more easily into the plant so that it is supplied with moisture during the winter and does not need to be poured.
