Geraniums - fertilize regularly for abundant flowering
Actually, the colloquial name "geranium" for the popular balcony flower - botanically seen - is not correct, because "Geranium" is the savvy gardener who understands our native stork beaks. The flowers, which are lushly blooming from many balconies, pink or white, are really called pelargoniums and originate from southern Africa. But no matter what your pets call it, they need to be fertilized on a regular basis to bloom beautifully throughout the summer.

Geraniums, as the Pelargonium should be called at this point for the sake of simplicity, are real heavy-eaters and therefore need regular good "feed" in the right proportions. Here, the fertilizers used should focus more on magnesium and potash than on nitrogen - although much nitrogen stimulates leaf growth, but not flowering. For this reason, specially designed, liquid fertilizers for flowering plants are also ideal for geraniums - or you can use the same Geranium fertilizer.

When geraniums are fertilized, the rule of thumb is that the plants should be fertilized more frequently - and therefore in a weaker concentration - less frequently (and then at higher doses). The more frequent fertilization leads to the plant continuously nutrients and at the same time prevents the burning of sensitive roots by too strong (because caustic) fertilizer.

However, before you go to the garden market and buy fertilizer, you prefer to save the coffee grounds from your breakfast coffee - this is a great natural fertilizer for geraniums and many other balcony plants. Coffee grounds contain exactly the right amount of nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus and can be administered once a week together with the irrigation water - or simply distributed like compost in the root area of the plants.
