How big does a vegetable garden have to be?

Before going to work, the future kitchen garden should first be planned. This also includes determining the required size: If you only want to pull a few tomatoes and herbs and maybe a few strawberries, then a few sunny square meters or even just pots or planters are sufficient. However, if you want to provide most of your own vegetables, you have to count on at least 20 square meters per person - any fruit trees not included. If you are still stockpiling and want to grow potatoes, carrots and cabbage for storage, for example, you will even need between 50 and 80 square meters - per member of the household. Even fruit trees and nut trees need a lot of space, unless they are columnar shapes - count on a small apple tree or raspberry bushes with a space requirement of at least five square meters.

The right location

Although there are many plants that thrive wonderfully in partial shade or shade; however, most crops are not. A vegetable garden should at best be in the full sun. If this is not possible, many vegetables thrive quite well even in the light partial shade. Make sure, however, that the sun is preferably in the garden in the afternoon.

The optimal garden floor

Immense important for a healthy growth of plants as well as satisfactory crop yields is a fertile soil. This provides the roots enough space and air for optimal development, stores plenty of water and nutrients and releases them to the plants as needed. There are four types of soils that are differently composed and also have different levels of nutrient-rich humus:

Plan and create a vegetable garden

Now that the pase site has been clarified and the soil has been improved according to the requirements, you can now make the creation of the vegetable garden. First of all, the soil is thoroughly dug up, the crumbs crushed and finely raked. Then you can create the beds and paths.

Flowerbeds and paths

The proven standard bedding shape for vegetables is rectangular, about a meter or a little more wide and usually between 1.5 and 2.5 meters long. It is preferably applied in a north-south direction so that the plants, which are awake in parallel rows, get the sun evenly. In the middle of the vegetable garden runs the main path, from the left and right of the main path about 40 centimeters wide byways run between the individual beds. These separate the individual vegetable beds from each other so that you can easily reach them from all sides. However, there are other examples of suitable bedding forms, for example in a semicircle. Beds and paths are created according to the following instructions:

Subsequently, the beds can be planted as previously planned.

water supply

Especially during the hot summer months, the vegetable garden must be poured more frequently. Therefore, when creating a new garden or kitchen garden area, be sure to lay water pipes that are coupled to the house connection and that one or two taps are available directly on the beds. The laying should be done as underground as possible at least 80 centimeters deep, otherwise they have to be emptied and turned off during the winter. But be careful not to accidentally damage the wires when digging. For this you can cover the pipes, for example, with bricks or bricks.

The setting up of rain barrels

The use of rainwater by means of collection containers is not always enough to cover the entire irrigation water needs, but is a recommended addition - which can also significantly reduce water costs. Rain barrels should always be equipped with a lid.

Tips

When planting the vegetable garden, you should also set up a compost place in a slightly shaded corner. For this purpose, wood boxes are very good, in the lowest layers of wood chaff and a drainage layer of coarse materials are packed. Then you can compost your garden and kitchen waste.
