Which cover is suitable for the vegetable patch?
Protecting plants against late frosts and pests, suppressing weed growth or harvesting earlier: There are many reasons to cover the vegetable patch. Depending on the purpose, you can use different fleeces, nets and foils for this purpose.
Frost protection by warming fleeces
Special thermal fleeces are made of weather-resistant, finely woven acrylic fibers. They protect vegetables against the cold to minus seven degrees and are therefore ideal, threatens the last night frosts. In summer, you can take advantage of the insulating effect of these fleeces and spread them over sun-sensitive plants.
Plant fleece is available in different versions. Thicker varieties, weighing around 50 grams per square meter, are not as suitable as a cover for the vegetable patch because they are too heavy for delicate plants. Better use the lightweight version with only about 20 grams per square meter.
Protection against pests
Carrot, cabbage and onion flies, but also cicadas, ground fleas and aphids make life difficult for amateur gardeners. Fine-meshed cultural protection nets as a cover for the vegetable patch keep the pests reliably away and thus ensure higher crop yields.
However, you should remove the nets, increase the temperatures, during the day and ensure adequate air circulation. For vegetables that are pollinated by insects, the cover must be removed during the day of flowering and reapplied in the early evening hours. This is the only way to ensure fertilization and rich crop yields.

Tips
Do not stretch the films and fleeces too tightly, so that the plants underneath can develop undisturbed. It has been proven to weigh the cover on the edge with stones or hang on the wooden border of the vegetable bed, so that the wind does not accidentally blow the plant protection.
