Fountains, gargoyles, streams or step-like waterfalls create movement and guaranteed to bring life and splash into the garden. As with all garden elements, you should plan these in proportion to the garden: A gently flowing stream can be refreshing in a small garden, in which a large fountain might look pretentious.
Rushing waterfalls
Waterfalls can be created as cascades or in stages. An unusual cascade - wonderful for a small, snugly landscaped garden - would be a row of watering cans or amphorae lying on its side, draining the water into each container below, creating a kind of artificial waterfall. This idea could be developed in different ways with different containers. On the other hand, a narrow channel interrupted at intervals by waterfall steps and occasionally by a square or round basin can create an enchanting atmosphere almost like in a Persian or Arabian garden.
Playful fountains
Fountains have been enjoying great popularity for several years. This is partly due to the availability of relatively inexpensive reproductions of traditional designs, and partly to the mass-produced, small submersible pumps that are sold together as kits with small fountains. Install such a kit in a part of the garden that heats up during the day and you will notice that the fountain cools down the area considerably. Reproductions and copies of traditional fountains such as dolphins and angels are available in stores everywhere. In addition, you can also purchase modern metal spring wells in leaf, branch or bird shape, where the water falls from one segment to the next. In general, there is a sheer amount of opportunities to bring small amounts of water in a decorative way for bubbling, trickling or flowing.
Tips
In Japanese gardens, bamboo spouts serve as gargoyles. The tube is balanced on another vertical bamboo tube, fills with water and pours it on, for example, underlying pebbles. A traditional Japanese bamboo cane drains water into a large stone bowl standing on a rugged rock with pebbles underneath.
