Norms are set for many things in life, which is not much different with garden beds. A standard bed is 1.20 meters wide. This is of course not optimal for all people, but uses the industry for gardening accessories.
If, for example, you would like to buy weed fleece, then you will find it mostly in a width of 1.20 m in the trade. If your beds have different dimensions, then you have to cut the fleece laboriously. But that should not stop you from choosing a bed width that you can comfortably take care of.
How wide should vegetable patches be?
Your body size is decisive for the optimal bed width in the vegetable garden. If you have more people working in the garden, then take your bearings from the person doing the most gardening or the smallest person. She should be able to work comfortably without getting agitated or having cramps.
To find the right measure, squat down on the ground and stretch out your working hand. Mark the point on the ground in front of you that you can still reach comfortably. This is the later bed center, where you still want to work without problems. Measure the distance between this point and your feet. This measure doubles you, the result is the optimal bed width for you.
How wide should flower beds be?
Although flower beds should be easy to care for, the breadth is not as crucial as in the vegetable garden. Here the optics and selection of the plants is usually more important than the convenience. Curved lines and different bed widths are looser and often more harmonious.
If you've planted groundcover or covered your bed with bark mulch, you rarely need to pick it up and it can be as wide as you like. You may be laying some stepping stones so that you leave no traces when entering and set some accents.
