Paving the garden yourself - How to lay paving stones correctly
Paving stones are a durable and nature-friendly covering for garden paths, seats, the garden pavilion and the terrace. Installed professionally, the cost of care is reduced to a minimum. This guide explains step by step how to pave your garden yourself.
Material list and preparation work
Before the practice, the theory is in the form of a true-to-scale plan sketch. Inform yourself in detail about the different qualities of the materials, because paving stones are also available as eco or seepage stones with improved water permeability. Put curbs and create bedding - that's how it works
Curbs are indispensable for a reliable stability of the entire pavement area. A concrete foundation of 10 to 20 cm thickness prevents the stones from slipping. Proceed stone by stone and tap everything with the rubber mallet after checking the course with the spirit level. As a rule of thumb, curbs should be one-third of their height in concrete.
Only when the concrete of the strip foundation has dried, lay the bed for the paving stones. In order for rainwater to drain properly, please take into account a gradient of at least 2 percent. A 20 to 30 cm thick layer of sand, gravel or gravel acts as a subsidence-free substrate and is fixed with the vibrating plate. Then spread a 4 to 5 cm thick layer of sand and pull it smooth.
Lay paving stones - this is how you do it right
Lay the paving stones in the planned pattern with a joint width of 3 to 5 millimeters. Tap each stone in the bed with the rubber mallet. It is important to note that you regularly check with the spirit level whether you use the stones straight and flush. With the help of the clinker cutter, you can cut every paving stone precisely into shape.
Pay special attention to the quality of the joint sand, do not worry about weeds and ants later on. Polymeric joint sand, z. B. Dansand, is ecologically harmless. Thanks to its composition, the material suppresses annoying weeds and keeps away ants. Repeat the joint sand with the broom repeatedly until the paving stones form a gapless area.
Tips
Did not you use all the paving stones? Then just use the surplus to create a fire pit in the garden. To do this, raise a 15 cm deep pit, cover the ground with gravel, and layer the paving stones all around. A little mortar between the joints creates the necessary stability.
