With its intense floral scent and the beautiful flower spikes, the lilac brings joy in every garden. However, lovers of this ornamental wood do not have to forego the spring appearing splendor, if they have no garden - under certain conditions, you can cultivate the shrub in a bucket on the balcony.
Selection of the pate variety
But before you go with joy beaming to the next garden center to buy there a lilac for your balcony, you should first decide on a suitable variety. So-called dwarf lilacs (for example, Syringa meyeri, Palibin '), which in any case are not that big and therefore easier to keep in a pot, are most suitable for the container culture. Also other smaller lilacs can be planted. If, on the other hand, it is a "real" lilac, then consider the following: This can also be up to two meters high and quite wide in the pot with appropriate culture. Your balcony in this case should be large enough to accommodate such a plant easily - and also have the pase statics, because a large lilac, including pot and substrate can be very difficult.
Location and substrate
The balcony should be oriented to the south or southwest, so that the lilac gets a lot of sun. The ornamental wood is a sun worshiper who only blooms lushly when in a sunny and warm location. Windy may be against it, that does not harm the lilac at all. The substrate is a mixture of good potting soil, sand, expanded clay and compost. Do not forget the drainage, because lilac can not stand any waterlogging.

Pouring and fertilizing
Lilac tolerates dryness rather than wetness, which is why you should water it regularly - but only moderately. Every two weeks, add a container plant fertilizer to the irrigation water, preferably one with a low nitrogen content. Nitrogen provides for rapid growth, which is not necessarily desirable in the bucket.
Cutting and repotting
About every two years, plant the lilac after flowering in fresh substrate and possibly in a larger pot. Cut it back to the desired size and also perform a root cut: the rootstock will otherwise be too strong.
overwinter
Since lilac is hardy, you can also overwinter it outside, but should wrap the pot in fleece and put on a polystyrene plate. The roots should not freeze. Do not forget to water the lilac on frost-free days.
Tips
For the Kübelhaltung high trunks are generally better suited than shrubby lilac.
