Plant firebeans properly
Ready-bought or raised on the windowsill fire beans are so sensitive to cold that the planting begins at the beginning of May / mid-May. In the sunny to partially shaded location, install the required climbing aid first. Then loosen the bottom until it is fine-grained to dig out small holes at a distance of 30-40 cm. Enrich the excavation with compost and a little sand before planting the young bug beans. After the first watering, spread a 5-6 cm high layer of mulch.

Which location is suitable?
Runner beans want a sunny to half shady location, like protected from heavy winds. In particular, look for a location that has room enough to install a climbing aid. In every good garden soil, the tropical climbing artists develop a rapid growth and rich blooms. Advantageous is a humus rich, well-drained soil with a pH of 5.5 to 7.5. Please note a crop rotation of at least 3 years.

Which soil does the plant need?
Beetle beans in a loamy-sandy, loose and humus soil with a pH of 5.5 to 7.5 achieve their floral optimum. A strongly nutrient-stressed soil pleases the exotic beauties just as little as a long-term situation. If in doubt, mix a few handfuls of clay with clay soil. For the tub culture, we recommend a Torreduzierte, biological vegetable soil for a carefree enjoyment of aromatic legumes.

When is flowering time?
From June to September beetle beans give us a furious colourfulness with inflorescences up to 35 cm in length. Now the hour of the pollinator beats, so that the opulent flower dress turns into a rich harvest of delicious fire beans. If you are only interested in the decorative value of this exotic plant, trim timid inflorescences promptly to make room for new buds.

Pour fire beans
On the sunny side of the sunny location, fire beans evaporate plenty of moisture through the imposing leaves. Therefore, water regularly as soon as the surface of the bedding soil and substrate has dried. Ideally, use soft rainwater and regular tap water to prevent the build up of excess lime in the soil, or to raise the pH to undesirable heights.

Feed roast beans properly
In contrast to the pronounced need for casting, beetle beans prove to be frugal with regard to their nutrient balance. If you are looking for a harvest of tasty legumes, we recommend organic fertilization with compost. From May to Harvest, work every 14 days of mature garden compost lightly into the soil and water. The specialist trade in organic liquid fertilizer is available for roasting beans in a bucket. Alternatively, from May onwards, you should give it a weekly dose of nettle, diluted with water 1:10.

With a minimum temperature of 10 degrees Celsius, beetle beans thrive in the bed in our latitudes as annual ornamental and crop plants. Although cultivated in the tub, there are still prospects of hibernation. Cut the withered and harvested firebeans close to the ground and carry them into a frost-free winter quarters. At temperatures of 10-12 degrees Celsius, pour occasionally so that the root ball does not dry out. It is not fertilized during growth rest. After 2-3 years, the plant has formed a bulbous root system, similar to a dahlia. This will pick you up in the fall and keep it dry in sand or newspaper in the cool, dark basement until next May.

Propagate fire beans
In the fall, leave some firebeans on the plant to use the mature seeds for propagation. Dried in an airy place, store the seeds in the airtight, dark glass in the cool cellar until next spring. At the beginning of April, you will start sowing according to this short manual:
Optionally, put a plastic hood over the potty and place it on the warm, partially shaded windowsill. If germination sets in, the cover has done its job and will be removed. Until mid-May you will be caring for the young bugs with soft water. From a height of 10-12 cm, you can apply liquid fertilizer diluted in half every 2 weeks for vegetables.

Is fire beans poisonous?
Like all other types of beans, beans are not suitable for fresh consumption. Only a heating to more than 75 degrees Celsius dissolves the contained toxins. Until then, humans and animals suffer poisoning symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, cramps and diarrhea. Be sure to grow bugs from out of the reach of children and pets. Since mere skin contact can cause severe allergies, we recommend the use of gloves for all planting and care work.
