The fiber-rich, healthy fennel provides both raw in salads and fried or cooked in rice, potato and meat dishes for a special, spicy flavor. How best to store vegetables is explained in our article.

There are several ways to store fennel:

Apart from the latter variant, it is advisable to keep fennel as short as possible, so to consume relatively quickly. After just a few days, it begins to dry out gradually and become woody. That is, it soon loses its aroma and changes its consistency.

Keep fennel in the fridge

Wrap your fennel in cling film and then place it in the vegetable compartment of the refrigerator. The film protects it from (rapid) drying out.

Alternatively, you can moisten the tuber plant lightly with water (by spraying with a spray bottle) and then wrap in kitchen paper before you put it in the fridge.


In both versions, the fennel remains fresh for about one to two weeks. In many cases it is still edible afterwards. However, then he already has significantly fewer vitamins and you have to cut away the shriveled outer leaves of the tuber.

Store fennel in the cellar

Remove the green from the fennel tuber and place the latter in a prepared box of moistened sand. You then transport the whole thing to the cellar, provided it is dry. So you can store fennel for several weeks.

Store fennel in the freezer

If you want to significantly extend the shelf life of your fennel tuber, simply freeze it. Our step-by-step guide explains how:

    Wash and clean the fennel thoroughly. Cut the vegetables into smaller pieces (the way you want to use them later). Blanch the fennel pieces in lemon water for three to five minutes. Scare the vegetables briefly in ice water. Drain the pieces in a sieve. Dry the fennel carefully with kitchen paper. Pour the pieces in small portions in freezer bags. Seal the bags airtight. Carry the freezer bags into the freezer.

So fennel is stable for at least six months.


Tips

You can also freeze fennel raw. In this case, simply leave out blanching and frightening in ice water. However, fennel will taste better later if you have blanched it before freezing.
