Offspring of the fig by cuttings
Fig trees can be easily propagated through cuttings, as they willingly and easily drift roots.Cuttings, also referred to as sprouts, are shoot parts cut by the plant, which are plugged into substrate, expelled there and develop into a new plant.
Propagation by cuttings
Cut the sprouts in spring if possible. Suitable are both woody and green shoots of a healthy and vigorous awake fig. Follow these steps:
After just two to three weeks, the little fig is still driving. If you have chosen to grow in a glass of water, you should transplant the small tree in soil before the entire vessel is filled with white roots of water.
These roots have to adapt to the soil after planting, which costs the plant a lot of power. Waiting too long for putting it will therefore delay the growth of the little fig.
Which branch pieces are suitable?
For cuttings of the fig the old gardening rule applies:
"The more woody the sprout is, the more difficult it is rooting. The fresher and greener the cuttings are, the easier it is, but the sooner the cuttings will rot. "
Keep a good eye on the stems. If this feels soft and muddy, the offspring unfortunately fails.
Propagation by head cuttings
Head cuttings are cut from a shoot tip with a short stem and a few leaves. Make sure that the mother plant is healthy and has no pests. If possible, cut the head cuttings before the fig flowers and bears fruit. For rooting you can either put the cuttings a few inches deep in water or plant them directly. If you want to draw the head plug in soil, it is recommended to immerse in rooting powder before.
Alternatively, you can use non-crowned stem pieces that are made, for example, when pruning a too big or unsightly fig. After the cut, leave the stem of the fig to dry in the shade for about 24 hours. The further procedure corresponds to the previously mentioned.
Tips & Tricks
To ensure that the figs grown from the cuttings are sure to bear fruit, you should be careful to cut cuttings from real fig trees.
