False jasmine can contain toxic oils
Bad jasmine can be poisonous!
Whether false jasmine, also called peasant jasmine or scented jasmine, is poisonous, can not be recognized externally. Care and attention should therefore be taken during planting and care. This is especially true when children and animals use the garden.
False jasmine contains essential oils
Originally were pipe shrubs, as also called false jasmine, not poisonous. However, many varieties were bred with too high a concentration of toxins due to numerous crosses.
Some varieties of False Jasmine have strongly fragrant flowers. That alone indicates that the shrub contains essential oils. Therefore, it is not allowed to eat bad jasmine. This also applies to the flowers and the inconspicuous fruits.
When cutting False Jasmine you should always wear gloves, as the plant sap may cause irritation and inflammation even on mere contact with the skin.
Tips
Previously, a variant of the popular jasmine tea was made from the flowers of false jasmine. Today this is no longer advisable because of the potentially contained toxins.
