Not all varieties of the torch lily are hardy
The home of most torchlight varieties is southern and southeastern Africa. The fewest rocket flowers tolerate therefore minus temperatures or much moisture. If you want to cultivate torch lilies in the garden, it is best to buy varieties that are hardy.

Even hardy torch lilies suffer from the cold and even more from the wet, which causes the roots to rot in winter.
Make sure you have a good location when planting. It should be protected from the wind and have a well-drained soil.
To hibernate winter hardy torch lilies outdoors, you must protect the plant from too much moisture caused by snow or heavy rainfall.
Arrangements for hibernation
To overwinter torch lilies in perennial beds, do not cut the evergreen foliage in autumn. The grass-like leaves bind together above so that they cover the middle of the plant. This prevents the plant heart from being covered with snow and getting too wet.
Even hardy varieties should be provided with a winter protection. Particularly suitable materials are:

Only partially hardy torch lilies should not be put outdoors. They would not survive low temperatures even with winter protection. This is not only due to the cold, but also to the increased humidity in winter. Therefore, you prefer to plant the ornamental shrubs in a bucket, which you can bring to the house in winter.
Place the torch lily in a frost-free, bright place and only pour some water when the soil is completely dry.
As soon as it is frost-free outside again, you can get the torch lily from the winter quarters.
Tips & Tricks
Unearthing hardy torch lilies in the fall, wintering in the house and replanting in the spring is no solution. The perennials rarely bloom in the first year after planting.
