The harvest of the tigernut in your own garden
She is still not well-known in this country, the Erdmandel, which is also called Tigernuss. The Sauergrasgewächs is native to southern regions, but can also be grown in the garden or in the pot. The harvest of small underground tubers takes place in autumn.
In autumn, the harvest of the tigernut begins
The harvest of the tigernut begins in mid-October. It should be completed before it starts to freeze. Frost causes the tigernuts to rot.
So you harvest tiger nuts properly
Tigernuts grow underground like peanuts and therefore have to be dug up. First, the green is pulled out.
With the grave fork loosen the soil around the mother plant. Most tiger nuts can be found where the plant green has covered the ground. But even at a distance of 50 centimeters from the mother plant, tiger nuts can still be found in the ground. Remove the fruits from the ground.
If you have grown the tigernut in the pot, the harvest is a bit easier. Simply flip the bucket over and pour the loose soil through a tight mesh or rabbit wire. Then you just have to pick up the tiger nuts.
After harvesting, let the almonds dry
After harvest, clean the tiger nuts from adhering dirt. To do this, gently rinse with water.
Next, store the tigernuts in a dry, warm place until dried. This is how they last for several months.
The fruits can be whole, chopped or ground to flour in all recipes that are suitable for nuts or almonds. Tigernuts can also be used for the production of petroleum almond oil or the preparation of drinks.
Up to 500 tiger nuts on a plant
Tigernuts are very small and almost taste like almonds. You are just about the size of a fingertip. For that, a single plant makes up to 500 small healthy tubers.
Tips
The aboveground green plant parts of the Erdmandel also contain no toxins. They can be used well as animal feed.
