Cutting cuttings
The best time to grow an gentian tree is in the summer months of June and July.
Cut several 10 to 15 centimeters long head drives with a sharp knife and remove the lower leaves.
Be sure to protect your hands with gloves. Even contact with parts of the poisonous gentian bush can cause skin problems.
Use rooting aid
Put the shoots in pots that you previously filled with potting soil.
Cover the cuttings with foil and set the pots bright and not too warm.
Since the shoots of the gentian tree do not always root well, use a rooting aid. These are available in well-stocked specialist shops or a nursery.
Wait until the cuttings drive out
Now all you have to do is be patient until the cuttings root. A sure sign of this is when new small side shoots form.
Leave the cuttings under the foil until they reach a height of 20 centimeters. Then the film is peeled off.
In warm weather, bring the small pots quietly outside and put them in the sun. But do not forget to keep the soil moderately moist.
Shape new gentian tree
Maintain the cuttings like a full-grown gentian tree.
Once the new gentian shrub is about 30 centimeters high, put it in a new pot of bucket earth. Now you can start with the first careful pruning.
Never cut too much at a time for the plant to flower earlier.
Tips & Tricks
As a hobby gardener you rarely get the high stem form of the gentian bush, which is often offered in the trade. This includes a constant pruning, which, however, means that the gentian tree bears little or no flowers.
