Gentian is a low maintenance flower for the garden
Keep gentian in the garden - this is how the Alpine flower thrives
The blue gentian has blossomed into a popular rock garden plant. That is not by accident. In the garden, the alpine plant provides magnificent flower decoration. Especially in rock gardens it finds the best growing conditions. Tips for planting gentian in the garden.
Plant Gentian in the garden
Gentian attaches importance to a good location and even more to a nutritious, laid back soil.
As a location, the rock garden is ideal. The stones keep the soil moist and ensure the supply of lime for Clusius gentians. Koch's gentians, on the other hand, feel better under conifers.
Site Tips:
Prepare soil well
Gentian, no matter what kind, does not tolerate waterlogging at all. Therefore loosen the soil well so that rainwater and irrigation water can drain off.
Enrich the soil with mature compost and, depending on the type of gentian, with lime.
Plant or sow in spring
The best time to plant is the early spring. Preferred gentian plants from the gardener usually bloom after just a few weeks.
Even in the fall you can still put gentian. If you want to sow the alpine flower, autumn is the best time. The seeds then get enough cold to germinate.
That's how you cultivate the gentian
Once the gentian has grown properly, not much care is needed.
Pour moderately but regularly so that the roots never dry out or stand too moist.
If the gentian does not want to flower properly, you can add lime or improve the soil with compost, depending on the variety.
Some winter protection does the gentian well
Basically, gentian is hardy, but especially sensitive plants should protect you from excessive frost.
Before winter, cut the plants to cover them. Cover the gentian with brushwood or other suitable material for the winter.
Tips & Tricks
Gentian is not a houseplant. You may also cultivate the plants with their pretty blue flowers in the pot or balcony box. But they belong outdoors on the terrace, the balcony or the outside window sill.
