Ehrenpreis is very often planted in the garden as a perennial. Here, above all, the Spike of Honor (Veronica spicata) plays an important role.
"Pale Blue" and "Royal Blue" are two great honor prize varieties that stand out for their strong blue color. Also popular is "Fascination", which looks particularly decorative by their up to 150 cm high inflorescences. "Pink tones" remains significantly lower at 80 cm, but shows very beautiful pink flowers.
Often commercially available under the name Hebe or shrub veronica species comes from New Zealand. It is not or only partially hardy.
Use in healing medicine and kitchen
The plant owes its name to its ingredients, which include essential oils, lactic acid, bitter substances, resins, saponins and tannins. First and foremost, the variety (Veronica officinalis) is called. It has been used for centuries for various kinds of ailments such as rheumatism, gout, gynecological problems, liver problems. Today Ehrenpreis does not play a significant role in naturopathy anymore.
Wild Honor Award is collected for the kitchen. There, the flowering herb is used for salads and seasonings. It has a bitter aromatic taste.
The shrubs offered for the garden are not suitable for use as a remedy or in the kitchen, because they have hardly any ingredients left.
Tips
In older botanical works Ehrenpreis becomes the Braunwuchsgewächsen. Due to new findings, Veronica is now assigned to plantain plants.
