The real lavender in the profile
The real lavender is an upright awake, evergreen subshrub. The plant is very versatile in borders, stone, steppe, heath and gravel gardens used and is traditionally planted together with roses. From the flowers, a fragrance for the production of cosmetic preparations is obtained; dried flowers are often laid out in the linen closet to keep moths away.
Facts and figures about real lavender at a glance
Sunny and dry location preferred
As a Mediterranean plant the plant needs a sunny to full sun, as dry and lean location as possible. Lavender can withstand both heat and dryness and needs a lot of heat. The soil should be sandy and very permeable and neutral to alkaline, so that the plants are well over the winter - in our case, the true lavender is not hardy and needs a good winter protection.
Cultivate lavender in the garden / pot
The true lavender can be cultivated very well both in gardens and in planters, under appropriate site conditions. However, the plant is not suitable for houseplant and should at least during the summer on the balcony or terrace. An annual pruning in early spring keeps the plants compact and willing to flower, as the lavender gets frosted over time. Do not cut into old wood, because the plants only drive out of young shoots again.
Tips
The following varieties have proven to be particularly successful: "Hidcote" (dark purple flowers), "Munstead" (blue-purple flowers), "Rosea" (pink flowers) and "Dwarf Blue" (intensely violet-blue flowers, particularly suitable for container culture).
