The dragon tree is one of the most popular indoor plants in Central Europe. Especially in connection with small children or pets, therefore, as with so many plants, the question arises as to the possible content of toxins in the plants.
For adult humans, dragon trees are conditionally harmless
The flowers and leaves of the dragon tree contain so-called saponins, which also occur in other plant species. The usually very limited intake concentration due to the bitter taste usually has no serious effects on the organism of an adult human. The situation may be different, however, if it concerns allergy sufferers or asthmatics: In this more sensitive group of people, various symptoms such as itching or difficulty in breathing were only observed through contaminated indoor air.
Caution is advised in children and pets
As toddlers may not be so keenly aware of the bitter taste of the dragon tree leaves, they could, unattended, actually consume amounts of leaves that cause serious health problems.
