A garden without dahlias or georgians, as the pretty summer bloomers are also called, is hardly conceivable. Only a few ornamental plants bloom so persistently and are as easy to care for as dahlias. However, it is a prerequisite that you replant the non-hardy dahlia tubers every year.

Are dahlias only planted in the garden or in the pot?

Dahlias can be placed in the flower bed as well as in the pot or bucket on the balcony and terrace.

Small varieties of dahlia can even be planted in the balcony box.

Should dahlias be preferred?

Since dahlias are only allowed to be planted out in spring due to the risk of frost, it is worth their while to bring them to the house from March onwards. They then tend to form flowers.

Georgines can also be sowed. Sowing takes place on the windowsill in March. The seeds are kept light, warm and moderately moist until they rise. Then they are isolated or planted in individual pots.

The dahlias are not allowed to go out into the open until the end of May, as occasional night frosts occur until then. Dahlias in the pot you can already put on the terrace or the balcony. However, bring the tubs into the house when it is expected to reach minus temperatures during the night.

Which location do Georgines prefer?

Dahlias tolerate direct sunlight. In the shade, they thrive badly or do not bloom at all.

Georgines can be planted in the same place every year to make sure the soil gets enough nutrients.

Large dahlia varieties should be planted in a sheltered place, so that the heavy flower heads do not break off by the wind. Also helpful are supports, to which the shoots are connected with the flowers.

When is the best planting time?

Dahlia bulbs may be planted in prepared plant holes in the garden from the end of April. Drive dehydrated dahlias into the open air only after the ice saints, as the danger of night frosts is too great.

How should the soil be prepared?

Loosen the soil deeply. Enrich it with compost, cattle manure and horn shavings. The soil must be permeable to water, so that no waterlogging occurs. Compacted soil should be mixed with sand.

Lift a planting hole that is about one and a half times as deep as the tubers are long. Place the dahlia tubers with the root neck up into the planting hole. New shoots grow out of the throat, not from the tubers.
