The Dahlia just does not want to bloom - why is that?
Dahlias or Georgines are much appreciated as colorful summer blooms in the garden and in the pot. Sometimes the pretty flowers just do not want to bloom. What can it be and what can you do so that the dahlias develop many colorful flowers?
Why do not the dahlias blossom?
Various factors can cause that Georgians do not develop any flowers or that the flower buds do not open, but become brown and rot on the shrub:
Wrong location
Dahlias are native to Mexico. There the georgians grow in bright sunlight. Plant Georgines in as sunny a location as possible. Although they tolerate partial shade, but there they do not develop so many flowers.
On the terrace, the dahlias should also be as sunny as possible. They must then be poured more often.
Soil too moist
One thing dahlias do not like at all. This is too moist soil from which the moisture can not drain.
Loosen the soil thoroughly before planting. Clay-rich soils are best mixed with sand to make them more porous.
Water Georgian regularly, but avoid waterlogging.
Too few or wrong nutrients
Use only organic fertilizers to provide the dahlia with nutrients. Synthetic fertilizers contain too much nitrogen. It stimulates the plant to form many stems, leaving no power for flowers.
Prepare the soil well before planting by improving it with mature compost and horn shavings. Ideal is a slightly acidic soil with a pH of 6.5.
Share too big tubers
Dahlias that have formed too many tubers flower less. If the individual tubers are too dense, they deprive each other of the nutrients. Split too large tubers before planting. The divided pieces can be used for propagation.
Tips & Tricks
As a cut flower, the dahlia only blooms when you select flowers that are open the first day. Buds do not open, older flowers usually fall off in the vase.
