Check statics
Before you green your garage, you should make sure that your garage roof can withstand the weight of green roofs. With extensive greening, you can assume a weight of at least 40kg per square meter, with an intensive (thicker) green roof plant can weigh up to several hundred kilograms per square meter on the roof. Since a garage roof is rather not made for such loads, it is advisable here to an extensive greening.
Instructions for greening a garage
1. Clean the roof
First, sweep the roof thoroughly and remove leaves, sand and other contaminants.
2. Lay protective film
The protective film protects the roof from dirt, moisture and possibly aggressive roots. A root protection film is especially recommended if you want to plant larger plants or even shrubs. However, this is not recommended for a garage roof in order to avoid excessive weight.
The protective film is laid over the edge. If several protective films have to be used, an overlap of about one and a half meters must be observed.
Cut holes in the film at the point where the water drains, keeping the drain functional.
3. Lay protective fleece
Now lay the protective fleece wrinkle-free and with an overlap of 10cm. Cut the procedure here as well.
4. Lay drainage, filter fleece and inspection shaft
Now lay the drainage elements. The individual plates are either pressed together, so that the overlap is natural or should overlap a few inches. Again the procedure is to be left free.
The last layer is the filter fleece, which prevents the drainage from clogging. Again, pay attention to the overlap and the process.
Now place the inspection box on the drain opening and fasten the manhole cover. Generously gravel is applied around the inspection shaft.
5. substrate and plants
Distribute the substrate on the roof evenly with spades and rakes. Subsequently, the plants or seeds can be set immediately. Finally, they are watered generously.
