The red Powerberry contains many very healthy ingredients. So the cranberry is rich in vitamin C, phosphorus, potassium, iron, antioxidants and tannins. Of course, fruits freshly picked from the bush contain significantly more vitamins and minerals than processed ones. Due to the high proportion of vitamin C and tannins, the cranberry tastes very sour and bitter - and is therefore only partially suitable for raw consumption.

Vitamin C, also known by the technical name "ascorbic acid", has a sour taste. You can convince yourself of this, for example, by buying and tasting ascorbic powder in the pharmacy. For this reason, fruits that are particularly rich in vitamin C are usually also quite acidic. With an average content of 7.5 to 10 milligrams of vitamin C per 100 grams, cranberries contain even more of this vitamin than lemons - and they also taste just as sour. At the same time, the equally high proportion of tannins makes the fruits bitter.


Processed cranberries are milder in flavor

Some people like this taste and therefore like to snack on cranberries directly from the shrub. If you do not like raw cranberries, you can try jam, jelly or juice instead. Even dried berries taste much milder - especially when sweetened with a little sugar or honey. Sauces or fruit pulp from cranberries, which - like lingonberries - can be eaten to savory dishes with venison or cheese - are particularly tasty. However, processed or boiled cranberries often contain quite a bit of sugar, although in principle this would not be necessary due to the high pectin content.

Only eat cranberry raw in small quantities

However, if you like raw cranberries, you should not eat too much, especially if you are taking medications that are absorbed through the intestinal lining. Cranberry ingredients can inhibit the absorption of some medicines and, when consumed in large quantities, they have a bloating and constipation effect.


Tips & Tricks

You can make raw cranberries more edible by sprinkling with sugar or sprinkling with honey or maple syrup. Take about 50 grams of sugar for 200 grams of fresh cranberries.
