Large-flowered hybrids are endangered
Brown leaves on a clematis indicate an attack by the clematis wilt. If the damage occurs in May / June, it is the Phnoma wilt. In midsummer, however, suggests the Fusarium wilt. Since it is a fungal infection in both cases, the diseases are summarized under the term clematis wilt. Endangered hybrids are primarily endangered, while robust, small-blooded wild species are spared.
Prevent and fight clematis wilt - that's how it works
To prevent a clematis from turning to brown leaves and the subsequent dying off of the climbing plant, prevent a clematis wilt from doing so:
Where the fungal infection breaks out, the entire clematis is cut back. To prevent spreading, the clippings are disposed of with household waste. Then treat the suffering climber with a fungicide that is approved for the home garden. If the shoots are already affected, the above-ground parts of the plant will be beyond saving. With a little luck, the clematis will drive out of healthy roots next year.
