If a clematis is not feeling well, the disease can first be recognized by its leaves. In contrast to the largely harmless leaf spot disease, identify the clematis wilt from these symptoms:
If a damp, warm weather prevails, the disease quickly spreads to the shoots. Within 2 to 3 weeks all aboveground plant parts of your clematis die off.
Prevent and combat clematis wilt - that's how it works
The clematis wilt is a fungal infection that primarily affects large-flowered hybrids. The sooner you diagnose the disease and take action, the greater the chances of success. How to do it right:
The choice of a rain-protected site has proven to be an effective prevention against the clematis wilt. In addition, a young plant should be placed so deep in the soil that 2 pairs of eyes are covered with substrate. Since the fungal spores do not reach the roots, a diseased clump will, with a little luck, drive off, even if it is completely dead above ground.
For all treatment methods, it should be noted that clematis wilt is highly contagious. The tool should therefore be repeatedly disinfected and the plant parts composted under any circumstances.
Tips & Tricks
If you do not want to mess around with yellow, brown and withered clematis leaves, plant the small-flowered Italian clematis. Clematis viticella and the resulting hybrids have proven to be resistant to clematis wilting. The same applies to the magnificent Clematis montana and the robust Clematis alpina.
