So the sowing of chili succeeds straight away
Chili has long taken the hearts of hobby gardeners by storm. The decorative plant with its pretty flowers and tasty pods can be discovered in many different varieties. Sowing chili is easier than you think.
An early date is of the highest relevance
Only when the sowing takes place in February or March does it result in a rich harvest in summer and autumn. Usually, chilli takes 60, 90 or 120 days from plant to maturity.
Raise the germ and sow properly
For a seed to wake up from its dormant state, heat and moisture are required. Floating the seeds for 1 or 2 days in lukewarm salt water, this premise is fulfilled.
Fill a seedbed or seed pots with nutrient-poor soil. Sow the seeds 2 cm into predrilled holes 2-3 mm deep. Then thinly sift and moisten with a fine shower.
Create an ideal microclimate
Located in South and Central America, chili loves the warmth. The following conditions promote rapid germination:
'Cold Feet' effectively prevents an insulating Styrofoam plate or a special heating mat. The cooler the environment, the longer the germination process is. If the mercury column drops below 10 degrees Celsius, it will remain completely exhausted at worst.
Pour well-dosed and do not fertilize
In various chili varieties, the growth from seed to seedling takes more than 14 days. So that the seed does not dry out, it is moistened repeatedly. Waterlogging should not occur. However, it is not yet fertilized in this phase.
Seedlings want to light
If the cotyledons emerge, the hunger for light increases. Ideally, place your charges on the sunny south window. If they present themselves as miserable seedlings despite a favorable position, a fluorescent plant lamp will work wonders in the dark season.
After 2 to 4 weeks it will be too tight for the young chili plants. If they are then piked in individual pots, the seedlings thank it with a strong root ball and vital growth.
Tips & Tricks
If the seeds do not want to germinate, use a proven gimmick. A teaspoon of guano is dissolved in a glass of warm water. Before sowing, the seeds soften overnight.
