Chicory cultivation - the exception to the rule
In cultivation, the chicory is not a follower. Contrary to the rule, it must first be sown in the garden before being further bred at home. Consuming? In a way yes, but also easy, exciting and effective!
Sowing in the field
Chicory is sown directly in the field between mid-May and early July. About four weeks after sowing, the young plants are piked.
A handful of site claims
Chicory is extremely frugal and easy to care for. He has few claims to his location:
The exact procedure - step by step
After the chicory has been sown and piqued in a loosened soil, it only needs a regular supply of water. In mid-September, the turnips / roots of chicory are dug up. They should have a diameter between 3 and 5 cm. One to two days they are left lying on the ground in the bed. During this time, the roots still draw nutrients from the leaves.
The second stage begins
Then the roots are freed from the leaves and shipped to a suitable location, for example in the house or in the basement. There they should drive out new. Buckets, crates and bowls are suitable as containers for moving the plant. Such a vessel is filled up with soil or sand. The roots are put in there and poured well.
The vessel should either be covered for the next time or stand in a completely dark place (12 to 18 ° C). If light were to reach the plants, they would develop many bitter substances and be less palatable.
The harvest can begin
After three to four weeks - usually at the beginning of the chicory season - the chicory flasks can be cut off. The roots drive out again afterwards! Thus you can harvest chicory throughout the winter.
Tips & Tricks
Even if the chicory quickly disappears when it is hidden away in the dark: do not forget to provide it with water on a regular basis!
