Calla is rarely winter proof. That's how she is wintered
Often the tubers of Calla are touted as winter proof. According to the breeders information, they may already be planted in the autumn. Do not rely on it. Only rarely do the onions survive a winter outdoors. Better to winter it in the house.
Dig up bulbs in the fall
Before the first frost, you should not dig out winter hardy Calla. Use a digger fork. Use a spade to prick off too many roots or damage the tuber.
Pry the fork into the ground a few inches from the onion and carefully lift the tuber.
Still existing leaves cut off. Then remove the adherent soil and put the calla to dry for some time. Only when the bulbs are well dry, they are allowed to winter quarters.
So the Calla onions are wintered properly
The dry, clean onions are best kept in a dry, dark room for two to three months. It should not be warmer than a maximum of 15 degrees. Well suited are basements, garages or garden sheds. The humidity should not be too high.
Store the onions so that there is still some space between the tubers. Air circulation prevents tubers from becoming moldy or rotten. It is helpful if you give some wood wool or dry peat around the onions.
Do not put winter-proof calla onions in spring
If the temperatures in the spring have warmed to over ten degrees and no night frosts are to be feared, the Calla may return to the outside.
If you prefer the tubers to the pot as early as March, reduce the time to first flowering in the flowerbed considerably.
Do not forget gloves
The calla is slightly poisonous. When working with Calla, always work with gloves.
Tips & Tricks
Non-winter Calla bulbs are easier to dig up in the fall when planted in a pot in the spring and planted with pot in the flowerbed. All you have to do is pull the pot out of the ground to bring the tubers to winter quarters.
