Beech stems are the seeds of beech
From Beech Seed Book yourself multiply
Beech seeds are generally better known as beechnuts. They grow in a protective shell and are ripe from September. Beech can be multiplied from the nutlets themselves. Roasted, they may even be eaten.
Collect and prepare bee seeds
Beech trees bear only very irregular fruits. In the so-called fattening years countless seeds fall to the ground, while in other years hardly a beechnut can be found.
Also, only beech bear fruits at the age of 40 to 80 years.
Collect the fruits if you want to propagate a beech yourself and eat the slightly poisonous nutmeg. If the seeds are to germinate, they must first be stratified, that is, they must go through a cold phase.
Sow seeds
The right time to sow beech is early spring.
To sow beech seeds, prepare small pots or find a spot in the garden.
Put beech seeds in the loose soil. Cover them with a layer of earth as thick as the beechnuts themselves.
The seed germinates after a few weeks
It may take several weeks for the young beech to germinate. At first, only the cotyledons appear.
It takes another time for the seedlings to become seedlings. They must be protected from frost and dehydration until final planting.
Beechnuts are poisonous
When collecting beechnuts, make sure that children and pets do not eat them. The nutlets contain the toxin Fagin, which causes stomach discomfort.
If you roast the beech seed or heat it differently, the poison is broken down. The beechnuts are then edible and can be ground to flour or processed into pieces in the kitchen.
The brown skin around the beechnuts is easier to remove if you sprinkle the beech seeds with hot water.
Tips
Whether a beechnut is fertile, shows the water test. Put the beech seeds in a bowl of water. All seeds which sink down are germinable while the above-floating fruits are hollow.
