Beech seedlings pull themselves
In beech forests you will often find many small plantlets in spring time, the leaves of which are still half enclosed by a capsule. These are beech seedlings sprouted from beech seeds, beechnuts.
To make a beech tree germinate
Beech seedlings originate from the fruit of the beech, the beechnut. Each fruit contains two of the triangular seeds. Beech seeds must be stratified to germinate. This means that they have to go through a cold phase.
In the wild this happens automatically through the winter. If you have collected beech seeds yourself to make a book of it, you need to simulate the cold phase. You can, for example, refrigerate the tripped beechnuts for a few weeks.
The stratified seeds are then sown in small pots or directly into the soil. Then comes a layer of earth that is about as thick as the beech seed itself.
Beech germinate slowly
It takes a few weeks for the seed to germinate and the beech seedlings to be seen. At first, the seed seems to rise from the ground. The hard capsule protects the delicate cotyledons. It falls off later or is carefully pulled off by hand.
Beech seedlings protect against frost
Beech seedlings are still too tender to withstand freezing temperatures. In a sudden frost break they can freeze. Protect the bee seedling from too low temperatures. For example, you can put old foliage around the little tree.
But make sure that the seedling still gets enough light. If he is too shady, he enters. That is why, for example, beech forests are lightened when growing new trees.
