This is how the pre-germination of beans works

From sowing the bean seeds to the harvest, it only takes about 10 weeks. It's even faster if you let the bean seeds germinate on the bright, warm windowsill. This takes about 3 - 4 weeks, makes little effort and is especially useful for the cultivation of bush beans and runner beans.

Advantages of pre-germination

preparation

Especially if the bean seeds have a hard shell, soaking in water is recommended. You can do that overnight.

culture vessels

For pre-germination of beans, it does not necessarily have to be the seed box. Pre-germination in flower pots or on a layer of cotton or kitchen paper is just as successful. Especially the latter method is perhaps still known to you from the biology class or from experiments in the day care center.

Pre-germ in flowerpot

You arrange small flower pots, which you fill with simple earth. Once you have moistened the earth, you put the bean seeds in the ground. The whole thing is overshadowed with transparent film or a transparent plastic bag under which a humid climate is created - ideal for germination.

Pre-germ on cotton wool and kitchen paper

For this variant, you lay out a flat container with a layer of damp cotton wool or several layers of damp kitchen paper. Then the beans are laid out side by side. Again, you worry by stretching with foil or bag for a humid climate.

Ideal is this method for gardening with children. If the side walls of the vessel are transparent, the germination of the beans can be closely monitored.

The best place

Two important prerequisites for pre-germination are still lacking: heat and light. You use both of these by placing your seed containers on the windowsill.

The little sprouts

The first tender shoots appear after about a week. Now the seedlings still need about 2 weeks to grow.

It is important that the substrate does not dry out or that the climate is sufficiently moist. Once the first leaves have unfolded, the young plant can be carefully removed with the fingertips.

Time for planting

Even if the young bean seedlings now have a growth advantage, the planting should take place only after the Eisheiligen. Only then is the soil permanently warm enough for the growth of the beans.

Tips & Tricks

Runner beans do not have to be brought forward. They are less sensitive to cold and are sown directly in the ground.
